Emap Radio
This year Steve celebrates his 25th year in the UK independent radio industry. He began as a late night presenter for Centre Radio in Leicester, progressing to mid-morning presenter for Viking Radio in Hull in 1984. In 1986 he was promoted to Head of Music, and then in 1987 to Programme Controller/General Manager. He was part of the team that took Viking Radio to the position of market leader, and oversaw the successful FM/AM split in 1988.
When Metro Radio Group purchased the Yorkshire Radio Network in 1989, he was promoted to Programme Director at Radio Hallam. During his five years there, the station's market share grew from 7.5% to 24%.
When Emap Radio bought Metro in 1995, he was made Managing Director of 96.3 Aire FM & Magic 828 in Leeds, where he achieved significant turnover, profit and audience growth. During his tenure, Aire FM became market leader for the first time in its history, was Emap Radio Station of the Year in 1998.
After a three year spell as Group Programme Director for Forever Broadcasting plc, where he presided over significant period of audience growth, Steve returned to Emap where he now has programming responsibility for the northern network of stations. These include Key 103 in Manchester, Radio City in Liverpool and Metro Radio in Newcastle.
